General Trends in American Indian Health

  • The mortality rate among American Indian children ages 1–5 is twice that of the general public in California. 

  • Among American Indian teenagers, the mortality rate is 4 times that of the general public. 

  • The alcohol related mortality rate among American Indians is 3.1 times that of the general public. 

  • The diabetes related mortality rate among American Indians is 1.39 times that of the general public.

Morbidity and Mortality Trends:

  • Fatality rate due to motor vehicle accidents is 3.7 times the rate of the general public in California. 

  • Fatality rate due to suicide is 3.3 times the rate of the general public.

  • Fatality rate due to unintentional falls is 3.6 the rate of the general population. 

  • A 1998 needs assessment of the AI community indicated that 70% of the population had or knew someone in his/her family that had an alcohol or substance abuse problem

Children's Issues:

  • The 2000 Census indicated that 28% of the American Indian population is under 18. 

  • In 1998, 1.39% of child welfare cases involved American Indians, while for the overall population, the rate was only 0.01%. 

  • From 1991-1996, the teen pregnancy rate among American Indians was six times that of the general public.

Elder's Issues:

  • A 2000 American Indian Elder Needs Assessment revealed that 12% of elders have some impairment in the performance of daily living activities. 

  • The same study found that 16% had difficulties with instrumental activities such as finances, cooking, or handling their medications.

Population Size:

  • The 2000 Census reported that there are 11,350 American Indians in Santa Clara County.  This is a 24.3% increase since 1990. 

  • If we include people who identified themselves a multi-racial, the American Indian community in the area is likely to exceed 25,000.

  • 61% or American Indians from Santa Clara County live in San Jose. 

  • Since San Jose was a relocation site in the 1950s and 1960s, this population represents over 80 different tribes, with no one tribe being dominant.

Population Age:

  • 1990 Census indicated that 27% of AI population is under 18.

  • The same report indicated that 2% of the AI population is over 65.

Population Income:

  • In 1990, 30% of American Indian households made less then $25,000 annually.

  • 12.7% of American Indians live in poverty.
